Our mission at El Caldito is to provide a healthy meal daily, in a safe and clean environment, for any hungry person.
Our vision at El Caldito is to continue to fight hunger by providing nutritious meals to our community until the need no longer exists.
El Caldito is a “soup kitchen”. A hot nutritious meal is served daily, Sunday through Friday, to everyone who comes to our dining room for lunch. A take-out sack lunch is offered on Saturdays.
Our Meal Serving Hours Are:
Sunday to Friday 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM
Saturday 11:30 AM to 12:00 PM
A full traditional holiday meal is served on Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
There is no charge and the only qualification to receive our services is hunger. All food preparation is done by volunteers, using donated foodstuffs from various sources in the community.
While preparing and serving the mid-day meal, we employ sustainable practices. We reuse wide-mouth 16 ounce glass jars with lids to hold leftover soup, reuse plastic containers with lids to hold leftover dishes, and reuse clean plastic grocery bags to hold the leftover food we offer to our clients so they have some food for later in the day. We bag bread, fruit, and vegetable scraps for prearranged local farmers to pickup and feed to their chickens and pigs. We wash plastic packing items, wash empty food cans, breakdown paperboard boxes, and breakdown cardboard boxes to deposit in our recycle bin. We also collect used aluminum for our recycle bin.
Our biggest sustainable practice is rescuing food. Every morning of the year but Christmas, a volunteer crew of two drive our van on a route to rescue donated food from local participating bakeries, grocery stores, hospitals, restaurants, and farms. They deliver the rescued food to the soup kitchen to be used in preparation and serving of the mid-day meals.
